Let It Snow
One of the things I love about my “second” job is that it takes me all over Virginia. This week I was all over the place, though most of it was in the deep coal mining mountains in southwest Virginia in the towns of Norton and Clintwood. Norton and Clintwood are not too far apart, but I was informed that Clintwood is so small of a town that the only hotel in town is one that only rents by the hour. Thank God for the Holiday Inn in Norton. Of course, I was told I could have stayed in Tennessee or Kentucky. Huh? Since I am a Geography wiz, I was totally dumbfounded how close I was to the neighboring states. Actually, I was amazed that Kentucky boarded Virginia. I honestly never knew that. Not like I really know where anything is outside of the coast. That whole middle of the country, heartland area---ehh…what’s to know?
Both towns are nestled in the mountains, which during the daytime hours is really beautiful. Unfortunately for me, I didn’t arrive during the day. It was late, I had been in the car a little over 5 hours in the car, alone (which is a lot even for an only child), I was getting antsy, when what to my wondering eyes should appear, but snow flurries! My first snow of the season! It was so pretty trickling down. But then, as the mountains kept coming, so did the snow. And it wasn’t so pretty anymore. I don’t scare easily, but I was starting to get a little nervous with the mountain, snow, and big truck mix. I finally made it to my hotel, and out of the snow for the night, only to wake the next morning with three inches covering my car. I am sure I looked like a fool dancing around trying to clear my car of the snow. The first snow is always the best, even if it was on the unexpected side. Though it did remind me that my ice/snow scraper was somehow broken last winter—Santa? Any help with that for Christmas?
